  • FSMO Roles

I have just been reading this article located on this site, http://www.petri.com/seizing_fsmo_roles.htm and its talks about seizing roles.

Well my fileserver crashed yesterday and it was that bad i could not get access to the server (windows server 2000) so i could not run DCPROMO to demote the server, so i format the hard drive and install Server 2000 again, i also have an exchange server which luckily for me had AD installed and all my OU's where in place. I added my new server to my exisiting domain and its brought all my OU's across to my newly installed fileserver. Now heres the problem with the FSMO.

The PDC and Infrastructure master where easy to transfer i have swtiched them to the exchange server for the time been. It won't let me change the schema master , RID, or the Domain naming master, it keeps saying the current role holder can't be contacted. Now in the article is says i can seize the roles but how can i do that if the current role holder, which is the crashed fileserver (the one i formatted) is not even exisit due to me formatting it? Is there anyway i can force the roles to transfer

Also i am having problems with getting my Exchange Information Store starting would this be down to the FSMO roles?

    thanks very much
