  • Company Merger -- Integration of AD between India and US

    Greetings all,

Our company just merged with another organization and we are now going through the painstaking task of integrating our IT services. First and foremost, of course, is our AD infrastructure.

    The facts:
    • The Indian site has around 400 users in AD, while ours has around 100.
    • We have VPN B2B connectivity between both sites and can access the servers on each side.
    • Both sites are running Server 2003.

My thought was to do an Interforest Restructure of our AD. Our US site would become while India would remain We would create a new Domain Controller, or demote one of our current domain controllers, add it to and then use DCPROMO to make it

Have any of you done this before? Do you have any recommendations on the best process?

    Thanks for your help!

What you need is Active Directory Migration.

1> As always you would take windows system state full backup frequently. Dont rely on third party backups solely when it comes to AD.

2> Create your child domain and configure it >

3> Install AD Migration utility and transfer 1 computer and user account and verify access levels and permissions. Migrate the remianing computer accounts, servers and user accounts from your US domain.

I Suggest leaving atleast 1 DC of the old domain running for months or years even after a successful migration.

Test the whole process in a test environment using backups from the actual domains to check for any unthought situation.
