  • Demote DC1 and promote Additional DC

    Hi,

We currentlt have two domain controllers. DC1 on server 2003 and Additional DC on server 2008. DC1 is also having roles of DHCP and DNS(preferrred) and DC2 has redundant secondary DNS. Now we would like to completely make it as 2008 demoting DC1 on serevr 2003. Can anybody give me clear steps to perform this. After demoting DC1 what necessary changes need to do for DNS and DHCP servers.

    Thanks,
    Snl.

I take it that you have a new server already for the 2nd 2008 DC. If so, go ahead and make that a DC on your domain and let replication begin between the 3 DCs. While your at it, setup DNS for this server as well and it can become your primary DNS server. I'd let this configuration run for 2-3 days.

Before you demote the old DC, a couple of things will need to happen.

    1. Change DNS settings on all computers. Should be as easy as changing your DHCP scope options.

    2. Transfer FSMO roles to one of the 2008 DCs and ensure that at least one of the 2008 DCs is a global catalog.

Once you have this done and ensure that everything is working as it should, demote the old DC and upgrade your domain functional level to 2008.

I think that's about it. Anyone else have something to add?

Thanks for the info. I did the follwing

      1. Backed up the DHCP from DC1 and Configured DHCP in New DC (2008 )
      2. Transferred the FSMO roles to the new DC whic is in 2008 server
      3. Configured DHCP scope options to point clients to the updated DNS servers
      4. Demoted the DC1 everything went fine.

Is there any test to verify everything working fine?

and now I have two DC's all in server 2008

      DC1

Primary DNS server IP is it's own IP
and Alternate DNS server is DC2's IP

      DC2
Primary DNS is it's own IP and alternate DNS is DC1's IP

      is this mapping is correct?

I would check event viewer and see if there is anything out of the ordinary logged. That would be a good sign to ensuring that everything is flowing like it should.

If you see no real serious issues on the network, I would assume you are ok. If something was to go wrong, I assure you would hear about it very quickly.
