  • How to monitor what users have rights to what folders?

IS there a reporter or 3rd party tool that will tell you what users have access to what folders? also how about some type of monitoring that will let you know if someone attempted to access a forbidden folder...

    Hi,

For the first part of your query I personally like ShareEnum and AccessEnum from Sysinternals.
For the second part you'll need to enable the Audit Object access policy (Done with caution as it may generate quite a few events) and configure the specific folders you want to audit.

ok so Audit Object access policy does it specifically have a code that says user A attempted to access xyx folder - denied, or -permitted

Yes you'll see which user accessed which files and folders, but as L4ndy said you'll first need to enable auditing for success and failure events, and then set the auditing settings on the folders. Also as L4ndy said this will generate A LOT of events in the event log so use with caution.
