  • DC Hardware upgrade

    Dear All,

    We have a task at hand to upgrade the hardware of the DCs in our domain. Our setup is as follows:

    1. Single Domain, with 5 sites.
    2. Main Site have 3 DCs;
    DC1 - Is a GC Having all the FSMO roles expect Infrastructure Master. It is a DHCP, DNS (AD Integrated), WINS.
    DC2 - Is having the Infrastructure Master role and also is a DNS server
    DC3 - Is another GC.

    The domain controllers DC1 and DC2 are the servers which we need to upgrade the hardware having the same name and IP addresses.
    My plan is as follows for DC2: 1. Install the new servers as member servers. 2. Run dcpromo on one of them say DC4 which will eventually be DC2, and transfer the IM role to that server. (not sure how to cope up with DNS). 3. Run DCpromo to demote the current DC2 and delete the computer name. 4. Rename DC4 to DC2 change the ip address and install DNS server.
    I am not sure how to proceed with DC1;

    Please let me know whether this approach will work. and also a step by step guide to change the DC1. Hopefully there will be no conficts with the name change..

    Re: DC Hardware upgrade

    Simple way would appear to be:
    Transfer all FSMOs to DC3
    Enable DNS (AD integrated), WINS and DHCP on DC3
    Change DHCP Scope for new DNS and WINS and renew IPs on clients

    Demote DC1 and 2 and remove from domain cleanly

    Build new DC1 and 2 as member servers
    Assign static IPs and register in DNS
    DCPromo and test replication
    Add DNS, WINS and DHCP as required
    Transfer FSMOs
    Once clients have picked up new servers properly , remove DNS, WINS and DHCP from DC3

      This would be the best way to do it... Only thing I would change would be to leave DHCP either on DC03 or install on DC02 and do 80/20 split to allow for DHCP redundancy.

        Gee I do so hate the 80/20 split. Personally I would do a 50/50 split.
        1 1 was a racehorse.
        2 2 was 1 2.
        1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
        2 2 1 1 2
