  • Is it possible to remove a dedicated root domain?

    Hi all,

We have a bit of a dilemma here.

When we setup our AD several years ago, the decision was made to use the dedicated root domain model. This is basically an empty root domain which contains the forest roles and groups, and is useful if you ever want to restructure your forest.

Well now we do want to restructure our forest, but we want to get rid of the dedicated root domain, as we no longer require it.

The problem is, whilst we can migrate the FSMO roles easily, we can't see how to migrate the forest root groups, eg the Schema admins and Enterprise admins groups.

Can anyone confirm if migrating the forest groups is possible?

From what we can tell it doesn't seem possible, but our thinking is that one should really be able to do this.

Greatful for any thoughts/comments on this )

AFAIK, you can't get rid of the root domain. Depending on your AD version and mode, you could perhaps rename.

Can't be done without starting a new forest somewhere else.

Why have you decided you don't need it?
      cheers
