  • How to move AD to another server

Is there a way to move
the active directory users/object/groups everything "on old server" over to th new server .

We need to go to faster hardware

    Thanks

Re: How to move AD to another server

could you give some more details on your setup
such as Hardware and Server OS version you want to move from and what you want to move to.

There are several ways to do this inclusive of commercial migration tools. but without more details you wont get much help as your situation is way too vague.

      Thanks ,,

I have 2 old servers that hold win 2000 server the first is holding Domain and second holding chiled domain

I am planning to chnage the old servers to new servers and maybe install win2003 server

Re: How to move AD to another server

I would add a new W2K DC in each domain on the new hardware by running dcpromo on the new servers after they have been joined to each domain. Once each new DC has been set up and replication has occured, you can dcpromo the old servers which will demote them and transfer the FSMO roles they hold to the new servers. Make sure that you make each new DC a GC and I would also recommend configuring DNS to be AD integrated if it isn't already. This will simplify the transfer of the DNS zones to thenew servers as they'll be replicated automatically to the new servers when you dcpromo the new servers.

sorry but we need to keep the same name for the DC on new hardware

          hello.com on old hardware
          hello.com on new hardware

          thanks,,

Re: How to move AD to another server

Use a VM temporarily: build a 2000 DC on there, replicate everything and gracefully demote the old server, replicate everything, prep the domain for 2003 (check Exchange 2000 attributes if installed), install 2003 on the new boxes using the old names and dcpromo, finally remove the old VMs.

How long can a sentence go on with commas?!
            cheers

              Thanks AndyJG247

              What's meaning VM temporarily .

My idea is makeing small network and install win2003 server with the same name
and import objects in old domain and export it in new one

what do u think about this?
Do all users can join to new server with the old name?

Re: How to move AD to another server

What I think he means is:

                1. Create a new VM with a new name, run DCPromo to make it a DC. Move FSMO roles to it.
                2. Demote the old server and switch off.
                3. Create a second VM machine with the same name as the old server, then DCPromo it and move FSMO roles to it.
                4. Demote the first VM used temporarily in step 1.

                  Thanks

I think I did not get it ....

1- Create a new VN with a new name, run DCPromo to make it a DC .Move roles to it.

where can I run the new DC in tree or new DC "forest"?
                  for example :

                  the old one is server1.com

new one is server2.server1.com or server2.com

Re: How to move AD to another server

I think you should tell us the names of the domains and the servers so we understand the setup properly

But in general, you will need a new DC in each domain (but not all at once if you dont want to)

                      Hi,

i hope what Andy is trying to say is install a windows 2000 server in a virtual machine, you can use vmware for this. they have a server product called ESX 3i
you can download and install it for free of cast.

i hope you have already experienced in the virtualization technology.

Re: How to move AD to another server

I hope I know what I was saying too!

If you want to add in a new domain controller then normally you just run dcpromo and add it as an additional DC in the domain. You are then free to move FSMO roles, install DNS/WINS/DHCP/GC etc at will.
If you want to get rid of the original server you can just dcpromo it out after the new one has all of the directory replicated.
You want to keep the same server name on the new server so to achieve this you need to use an interim server. As I'm guessing you don't have spare hardware for this, you can use a virtual machine for this process. Install a virtual 2000 server, dcpromo it and move all FSMO etc. Once it is happy and completely replicated you can demote the old server, replicate it some more and let it sit for a bit. You can then install the brand new hardware using the old servers name. This should then give you a new DC with the same name as the old server.

Obviously the key things to keep in mind are:
                        1. Keep full backups at every stage.
                        2. It is recommended to have at least 2 DCs in any domain at any point.
                        cheers
                        Andy
