  • Error When Adding Users/Computers In Active Directory

    Hi Everyone,

Was trying to create new users on a Windows 2003 Server via Active Directory Users and Computers but am getting the following error:

Windows cannot create the object XYZ123 because the directory service has exhausted the pool of relative identifiers.

Very new to Active Directory - was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this?

    Thanks,
    B

It sounds that the RID master is unavailable.
Can you run netdom query fsmo in a command box?

Did you run the test that Marcel suggested? Start with that and post the results here.

Re: Error When Adding Users/Computers In Active Directory

                Hi,

You could also try the following:
                • Click Start, click Run, type dsa.msc, and then click OK.
                • Right-click the selected Domain Object in the top left pane, and then click Operations Masters.
                • Click the RID Pool tab to view the server holding the RID master role.

Re: Error When Adding Users/Computers In Active Directory

Is that a local DC or a remote one?
First see if you can ping it by its name.

Then try the dcdiag /v /test:ridmanager command and post the results if you can.
Check the events logged on the RID master or any other DC.

                      Local - I think...

First see if you can ping it by its name.

                      yep pingged it...all looks fine...

Then try the dcdiag /v /test:ridmanager command and post the results if you can.

trying the command you suggested but getting 'not a recognized command' reply....

For future reference for running these commands, you need to install the Support Tools from the appropriate Installation CD. You then go to that path is the command prompt to run the appropriate switch, as they run the program that will be in the Support folder. (think I'm right with the name of SuppTools please correct me if I'm wrong as off the top of my head)

It's part of the Support Tools (Should be in a folder with the same name on your windows 2003 CD).

                          Or: http://www.petri.com/download_window...port_tools.htm

The Netdom.exe mentioned before should be there as well.
