  • Set DNS for single host in domain

Is there a way to set DNS to return a specific IP for a single host and still forward lookup for the rest of the domain?

For example I want company.com to still forward to a public DNS to resolve the IP but I want intranet.company.com to resolve to a specific one.

My understanding is if I setup a zone for company.com then instead of forwarding the unknown hosts it will return that it is unresolved.

    Thanks.

Maybe, if you tell us what DNS server you're using...

Re: Set DNS for single host in domain

If I remember correctly this was answered a while ago but I can't find the post. I think you can just create a record called host.domain.com and point it to the IP you want it to resolve to. I'm not with a DNS box at the moment but give it a go. Apologies for being a bit light on detail....

Re: Set DNS for single host in domain

According to MS TechNet "authoritative DNS servers cannot forward queries for domain names for which they are authoritative".

If you just wanted to do this for just a few clients you could populate their HOSTS file with the "odd-ball" mapping. The HOSTS file gets pre-cached and the cache always gets checked before going to a DNS server.

Re: Set DNS for single host in domain

Agreed but this isn't the domain we are adding. I was talking about adding host.company.com as a zone, not company.com with a record within it.

Re: Set DNS for single host in domain

Thanks for the help, I was able to do this using AndyJG247 technique of adding the hosts.company.com as a zone which seems to work.

I couldn't use the HOSTS file solution cause I needed the host mapped on all our company workstations.

              Again thanks for the help.

Think this is another way for you. w2k3 allows conditional forwarding.
