  • dns from a client logon perspective

I would like to know how dns works in respect to active directory sites and services Everytime I see an example on dns they always show internet resolution someone typing in for example. I want to see dns from a client logon side for example what happens when someone logs onto there workstation. How are sites and logon servers selected Iíve never seen anyone lay this process out its always that same internet resolution example.

lots of info on that in Technet. Here is a starting point.

Basically, the client asks DNS for a DC in its domain. It goes to that DC, and the DC figures out what DC is really the closest for that client based on site link costs. After that, the client will remember and goes directly to the closest. There is more to it (much more!) but this covers the principle.
