  • Windows 2003 DC/DNS server having sporatic extenal lookup failures

We have recently moved from a Primary DNS model to AD integrated DNS and have recently found that one of our DC/DNS servers cannot resolve some external queries to common sites like msn.com, google.com, yahoo.com. We found the temporary fix is to restart the DNS service. This happens like once a week. I have googled the issue but have not found a suitable answer.

I've checked the Event logs for any clues as to why the error occured but I haven't found anything related to why the lookups fail. We do not use forwarders to our ISP, we're using root hints.

I've run DCDIAG test: dns to verify DNS and it passed.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Try using a forwarder to troubleshoot the issue?

Maybe your firewall has some root hints open and others blocked.

Check to see if the recursion option is disabled. I think if it is disabled it will not let you query anything but its own domain.
this is a dns server setting .. not a zone setting ...

      i think ....
