  • Storing Office Details in AD

    Hi All

    Has anyone stored details of their offices or sites in AD? I realise that there's Sites and Subnets and also the address attributes for users but i had more of a dedicated object in mind that would store;

    Name/Unique ID
    First Line
    Second Line
    City
    County
    Zip/Post Code

Alternatively we could just create a site or office list... bearing in mind that we have 500+ sites/offices.

    Any opinions are welcome...

    TIA

    Chris.

It all depends on what exactly you are trying to achieve but If none of the native attributes fit your needs, you can look into modifying the Schema. That is not reversible though and it's not encouraged unless there is no other options.

We're just looking at having a data source which contains the details of each of our sites. We'd prefer AD as we use it as a central source for as much info as possible but could alternatively just create a simple SQL database.

The site info is going to be periodically imported into our CRM system so that user's address details are always accurate.

An AD Schema upgrade is an option but not the preferred one.

Couldn't you do a LDAP query instead? Is it a custom made CRM or a community developed?

Who is going to query it and for what purpose? Most of the user data goes in their account attributes (which can be bulk edited easily).
You can export all of that info using ldifde etc and then maybe publish as a web page?

Cheers for the replies so far, i'll try and elaborate further.

We're in need of a definitive site list, we initially thought AD may be able to hold the site details but the more we look, the more unsuitable it appears to be.

So far my thinking is that, we'll use a basic SQL DB with the details listed for each site. Upon AD user creation, we'll use the DB to populate the user's details.

We can then sync the user accounts between our custom CRM therefore pulling in details about the user. Ensuring that they're accurate as they're from AD which was originally populated by our definitive list.

How do you create the users, certain details can be copied when a user is created. If you are bulk importing users you can bulk change them easily.
Failing that you can always use OUs for sites and bulk change them, per ou, to have the same postcode, address etc maybe?
              cheers

Our users are created using an in house developed .NET web app, so it can easily reference another SQL Database.
