  • One domain Controller for 2 n/ws

    Hi all,
I have one dc named server and domain is example.com.it is window 2003 std.DNS and File Sharing are also installed int the same DC. Our Primary DNs Server IP is 192.168.1.100. Now Actually iwant is to separate the n/w s into two.

ie, 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.1.168.2.0/24. My question is can i use the same DC to authenticate users and DNs For Name Resolution. If not How Can I implement that.?

    Thanks in advance

As long as the DC can see both networks (and both can see the DC) I don't think there will be a problem

You could do this by having two NICs, one on each subnet or possibly by having two IPs on a single NIC
Make sure the DNS server is operating on all network interfaces.

Re: One domain Controller for 2 n/ws

      thanks for the quick reply

I have added 2 ips on the same nic .

      ie 192.168.1.100

192.168.2.100 but name resolution doesnt take place.

I can able to ping and view the share bygiving the \\ip\share name

pls explain a little bit more in DNS integration.

        Go into DNS management console
Right click on Server and then Properties
Check the Interfaces tab for Listen On All IP addresses

Also check both addresses have Host (A) records in your zone and (same as parent folder) A records exist for both

Re: One domain Controller for 2 n/ws

I would not recommend multi homing the DC with 2 IPs, it could
cause problems with the DC Glue records registration in the DNS

although this example I gave for DHCP , but it has the same effect with 2 NICs/IPs on two different networks.
If a NIC configured for DHCP is enabled but cannot contact a DHCP server, Windows will automatically assign itself a 169.254.x.x IP address. This is a concern for DCs, because the 169.254.x.x IP address will be registered into DNS. This will cause clients to try to contact the DC on that IP, but this will fail.
