  • Joining over a VPN

I have a bunch of computers in two sites (real-world sites, that is; not AD Sites though, I'll solve that later).

Site A can accept incoming connections fine so it's where the RRAS/DC server "Waiter", sits. I've tested the VPN connections from a few locations and it seems to be working fine.

Now I had a domain controller, "Slave", at the second site, Site B, that was joined to the domain back when it was at Site A, however since moving to Site B it experienced some hardware issues and had to be reinstalled.

Before I can promote the revived computer to a domain controller again I need to make it join the domain (indeed, dcpromo throws an error if you try this when you're not a member of the forest/domain you want to add to).

(Waiter and Slave are both WS2008 ).

I created a VPN connection on Slave and it can connect to the virtual network fine. I can resolve all the hosts in the remote network and ping everything fine.

...except I can't make it join the domain. I get this lovely error:

    Code:
    ---------------------------
    Computer Name/Domain Changes
    ---------------------------
The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "world.local":
The network path was not found.
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

Hurrah, just what I needed on a Sunday.

After some digging on the web I learned that "net view" can be used to assist solving this.

    Code:
    C:\Users\Administrator>ping world.local.
Pinging world.local [192.168.0.90] with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 192.168.0.90: bytes=32 time=62ms TTL=127
    Reply from 192.168.0.90: bytes=32 time=63ms TTL=127

    Ping statistics for 192.168.0.90:
        Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
        Minimum = 62ms, Maximum = 63ms, Average = 62ms
    C:\Users\Administrator>net view world.local.
    System error 53 has occurred.
The network path was not found.

    C:\Users\Administrator>net view 192.168.0.90

The network path was not found.

    C:\Users\Administrator>net view \\world.local.

    C:\Users\Administrator>net view \\192.168.0.90

    C:\Users\Administrator>net view \\localhost
There are no entries in the list.

    C:\Users\Administrator>
If it works for the IP address but not the domain name then it's a DNS issue, but there's scant information about what to do if neither work.

    Any ideas?

    Re: Joining over a VPN

I would suggest trying nslookup from "Slave"

    Code:
    C:\nslookup
Default Server: (should read your DNS server at other site)
IP Address: (should be IP addy for DNS Server above)

    > [type your domain name here]
You should get the resource records for you domain controllers. If not you need to check the NIC properties of your server under DNS.

Post back the results of this.
