  • Error after transferinf FSMO roles

    Hi, I need some help.

I have a not so reliable server which acts as PDC, DNS and DHCP. I installed a new server and join the same domain. I transfered all FSMO roles, as per article in this web site, to the new server. I leave DNS and DHCP on the old one though. The 2 servers are active in the same domain.

All applications running on SQL-server, file sharing slow down to unbearable speed. I also got error messages of the like :-

" File Server Resource manager failed to enumerated share paths or DFS paths. Mapping from local file paths to share and DFS path may be incompolete or temporarily unavailable."

    and NTDS replication errors.

What did I do wrong ?. Can you help ?.

    Regards,
    Seal

Re: Error after transferinf FSMO roles

What do both boxes show the FSMO role holders as?
Is DNS on the new server?
Do the app servers now point to it for resolution if the original server is unreliable?
        DCDiag and NetDiag run cleanly?
        cheers
        Andy

muneer_bom3 : I did as per link but did not help.

          AndyJG247 :

The new server has all 5 roles. I use transfer FSMO not seize.
I install DNS on the new server but not activate it yet.
Could you tell me how to point app server to it for resolution if the original server is unreliable ?.

          netdiag/dcdiag seems fine.

Re: Error after transferinf FSMO roles

Just set its primary DNS server to be the second server.
You want your second server to be "activated" for DNS although I'm not sure what you mean by that?
            cheers

Re: Error after transferinf FSMO roles

It is pretty critical to have at least 2 domain controllers working. If the other one is faulty then I would look at getting a fresh one installed (if nothing else then in a VM). Are you sure the second DC has all of the objects and that replication is working correctly?
                DCDiag/NetDiag/repadmin etc
I would want to make sure before you do anything more
                cheers

Re: Error after transferinf FSMO roles

                  Thanks AndyJG247.

Currently the second server services quite well. However, there is replication error on one of DC . It is in the same domain but under different division. There were replication error of this DC on the old server as well. Thus I thought it would be ok.

Netdiag runs ok. DCdiag reports replication error on the server I mentioned.

I shall spend some time look at that server once I am sure tha everything works allright.

                  Thanks again.

                  Best Regards,

Re: Error after transfering FSMO roles

                    Hi AndyJG247

I have questions to ask you.

After I install second DC in place of the old one, all other applications seem to work ok. However, anapplication running sql server and authenticate user via DC does slow down a lot. I looked at ADS site and service and found that I manually set NTDS connection from application server to the new DC.

I did not know what to improve performance so I delete all connections and let it generate connection itself. After reboot the second DC, the application seem to work ok.

I just want to ask why manually setting NTDS connections to other DCs does impact the performance of the application server. Could you explain ?.

                    Regards,
