  • DNS, DHCP, etc

Are there any hard and fast rules for our domain controllers holding these rules? We have the following:
DC1: All FSMO, primary DNS, secondary WINS, 80% DHCP
DC2: Primary WINS, secondary DNS, 20% DHCP

Will this work or should we do this:
DC1: FSMO (RID, PDC, IM), primary DNS, secondary WINS, 80% DHCP
DC2: FSMO (DN, SM) Primary WINS, secondary DNS, 20% DHCP

Or should we add other servers? Really looking for best practices on this from MS but can't seem to find for guidance. We're wondering if we're painting ourselves into a corner with just two two servers to do everything.

Note that the information in the KB article in the previous post appears to only apply to 2000 Server, not Server 2003.

We have a 2003 domain (forgot to add that). As we have a 2003 domain, then this article doesn't apply. We have 7000 users--not sure that matters, either. We're getting someone in to design this environment, but we want to make sure we are somewhat informed before doing this.

Note that 2003 is based on 2000 and the behavior is still the same.

your configuration is fine so is the other plan you suggested.
there is no golden rules on where to place the services as long as the service is good, quick, and backed up well.
I would personally add another DC just to load balance the LDAP, etc since you got 7000 Users.
