  • Hostname Changing in client computers

    Hi,

In our company we have a domain with more than 2000 users and 1000 workstation. All the workstations machines are running
    in windows xp proffesional edtion.

We are in the process of change the hostname of the machine, so we have to change the name of the workstation remove it from
domain and rejoin the computers once again into domain.

Can any one give me ideas what are all the steps needs to follow

    Example :-

    1. Rename the hostname of the computer then change the machine into workgroup and restart the system.

    2. Delete the old computer accounts from active directory.

    3. Rejoin the machine into domain.

the above steps are enough ?

Experts need your inputs on this.
    Regards,

Yes, that looks fine. You might want to look into a utility called NETDOM to automate this process:

      Hi m80arm

Yes you are correct we can use netdom , but i have to copy netdom in each workstation. i prefer doing it manually,

The order to execute this process which is given by me is correct or not?

very simple , just go to the workstation and rename it , that would also automatically rename the Computer object in your Domain.
test it for yourself and see.
no need for all this hassle of dis joining and rejoining process.

          Hi,

I think netdom is the best utility to rename the computer name in ad enviroment...

use psexec utility to run application on remote computer, seating at one desktop (make bat file or script which will complete the task in an hour) you can renmae the remote computer name.
