  • GPResult showing Domain Type = NT4 (but its SBS2003?)

I have a client that Im getting ready to migrate to new hardware, currently they are on SBS2003 Standard Sp2, all updated, no problems, they just need more horsepower on there server. They originally were on a dying Dell PE2600 and they had already had a Dell PE840 in the office doing only DHCP!)

I previously migrated them from SBS2000 to SBS2003 in Feb 2006 via the SwingMigration kit (well worth the $$ by the way)

Domain and Forest are at 2003 levels

Ive added another 2003 Server as a 'swingDC' and everything seems hunky dory, but when I do gpresult it says "Domain Type: NT4 Domain"
It said this previously when I migrated them as well, but Ive since forgotten about it till now.

It says this on either the SBS machine, or the swingDC machine.
Im not sure if the previous IT person that built the old PE2600 server migrated them from NT4, and they have no idea.

Im going to build a VMWare install of SBS2003 tonight to see if SBS says that by default, but figured Id ask here anyways.
The only other thing I noticed is there domain name is localwatercompany.local and they log onto the PC's with a shortened version "LWC"

    Any ideas ?

Re: GPResult showing Domain Type = NT4 (but its SBS2003?)

I've seen it happen as well (2003 domains reporting as 2000) but I haven't spent much time investigating it.

Can you check out msDS-Behavior-Version in CN=Partitions, CN=Configuration and see if it is set to 2 as it should be? I'm pretty sure it will be fine as your domain works properly..

You can check it on multiple DCs..

      Also, check this out:
      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322692/en-us

Find in page " To discover Windows NT 4.0 domain controllers, follow these steps: "

Try this to see if there are any "stale" NT4s in your domain as well.

No luck, checked all the entries listed and all show the 2003 level indication

Re: GPResult showing Domain Type = NT4 (but its SBS2003?)

I saw it about a year ago.
A windows Server 2003 domain showed up as Windows 2000.
Never spend really much attention to it before. But did some research on it at that moment. This seems to be occuring all the time, and has no affect. So i would not worry about it. Just checked my test environment (2 Windows Server R2 ent. Ed. and Two XP SP2 desktops in the same domain), and GPRESULT also shows Windows 2000 while the the policies where created on the DC (Windows Server 2003 R2). Forest and domain level is 2003 mode.
This also shows that it is not caused by the ADM files that where used to create the policy.

I wouldnt mind if it showed as Win 2000 domain type, its the "Domain Type = NT4" that bothers me

(listed under the GPResult in Computer Settings)

I think it's a bug. Have just checked against W2K3 SBS and it reports Windows 2000.

Have you raised domain/forest level to Windows 2003 after the migration? My bet is that the moment you go to W2K3 Domain/Forest Functional Level, gpresult will start reporting it as "Windows 2000".

Yes, I raised the Domain and Forest levels to 2003 June/July of 2007, about 4 months after the migration.

Im stumped as to why it shows NT4
