  • DC Win2K server doesn't demote

    I have installed new W2K3 Server R2 Standard Edition SP2 as a member server in the domain W2K SP4 Server DC.
    After launched the procedure adprep /forestprep, adprep /domainprep /gpprep and promoted W2K3 the new DC, I launched dcpromo on W2K to demote it to domain member server, but it appears the following error:
    "Impossible to contact the DC ....."
    The domain specified doesn't exist or it is impossible to contat"
    Typing the DCdiag command on W2K3 R2 SP the answer is:
    -----------------------------------------------------
    C:\ >DCdiag /test:services /v

    Performing initial setup:
    * Verifying that the local machine superserver, is a DC.
    * Connecting to directory service on server superserver.
    * Collecting site info.
    * Identifying all servers.
    * Identifying all NC cross-refs.
    * Found 2 DC(s). Testing 1 of them.
    Done gathering initial info.

    Re: DC Win2K server doesn't demote

    Hmm, I see few possible options here:
    1) check your DNS config. Which DC is a DNS server (both maybe?), how they are configured in lan connection properities.
    2) Check syslog. Maybe there will be some clue regarding your case.
    3) Possible solution: if you have only 2 DC's, you can transfer FSMO roles from DC with Win2000 to DC with Win2003. Then you can destroy old DC, remove all replication paths and everything should be ok, but that's solution of last resort. Of course, I'm assuming that your first DC was that one with win 2000...

    Good Luck,
