  • Active Directory on NAS

    hey,

has anyone ever tried installing AD on NAS?
i mean, putting the NTDS.DIT file on the NAS and define the DC to work with it...

is that possible? and if anyone has ever done it, how does it work? do u recommend such an architechture ?

    Thanks.

I have seen people do that and it did work for them, but I do not see any reason for putting NTDS.DIT on NAS. AD database is built on JET technology which is very sensitive to the way you put the data on the physical media.
NAS might have write-ahead caching enabled - something that can cause a havoc in a case of unexcpected shutdown (server thinks that transaction has been committed, but the NAS has crashed before committing the transaction)

NAS also does not improve the performance.

Personally I would put the NTDS.DIT on a good local RAID volume - NTDS.DIT can be always recovered by the means of replication from the other DCs in the domain.

      and how about Exchnage

First of all, i realy appritiate the answer.
second, i would like to ask if you think exchange database would work the same, since it is also JET engine based.

in contrary to AD, Exchange DB has tendancy to become quite large, so a NAS solution might be proper in this case. the question is, how will it affect performence ?

      thanks again.

Support of Exchange 2003 on NAS is rather recent addition from MS. Exchange 2000 and 5.5 are not supported.

You might want to take a look at the following KBs:
        http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839687
        http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;328879

You might also want to take a good look at the following thread at activedir.org mailing list:
        http://www.mail-archive.com/activedi.../msg18845.html
Though they are talking about WSS (Windows Storage Server) vs. SAN vs. NAS, it still applies to your question.
