  • Win2k mixed mode to Win2k3 native

    Hi,

I'm experiencing some strange issues about domain/forest migration. I have to migrate 2 old domains/with each separate forest(1xWin2k mixed mode + 1xWin2003 mixed mode) into one big Win2k3 nativ domain. Trusts relationship works great, but:

    1. ADMT v3.0 doesn't recognize source domain. I can't migrate users , computers, groups....nothing.Apears only target domain.
    2. DNS zones works fine(queries are solved from all 3 domains), and loging on old machines with new credentials also it's OK and this tells me that trust works.
    3.netdom trust /d:domain1 domain2 /verify /twoway says OK.
    4. ADMT 2.0 installed on old machines does'nt recognize new domain.
    5. I can't add users from old domains(even with most elevated credentials : domain admin or enterprise admin) into new domain groups(any kind).
    6. All domains shows in logon screen (The famous "Press Ctrl+Alt+Del).
    7. In an all 32 bits enviroment(new domain 32 bits+old domains 32 bits) works great, but in 64 bits/32 bits mixed enviroment seems like nothing works well.

    Extra info about involved domains:
    new domain : Win2k3 x64 R2 w/ SP2 installed [2003 native mode]
    old domains : 1xWin2k3 32 bits SP2 [mixed mode] + 1xWin2k w/SP4[mixed mode]

What I am missing ? Thanks in advance for help.

    1. Where you have installed the ADMT V 3.0? (In source domain or Target domain).

    2. There are two source domains, are you facing the issue in both the domains or in one domain only?

ADMT installed on Target Domain. The issue is present only from Win2k domain side.

Can you logon to W2K domain from the server ADMT is installed on ?

Re: Win2k mixed mode to Win2k3 native

@guyt: I can logon to old Win2k domain from the new machines; trust is verified and in it's place. Still I can't add user from/to new/old domain to different groups. I can add users for log on locally(for example) rights on other machines in new domain, but not valid this facility for Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.

Re: Win2k mixed mode to Win2k3 native

Are any limitations regarding Windows Server 2003 x64 R2 w/SP2 domain migration tasks - especially external trusts - ? Are any limitations regarding 32 bits enviroment translating to x64 new enviroment (only to Windows Server 2003) ? ADMT v3.0 Migration Guide doesn't mention anything about these kind of limitations....

Do you have any localized DCs in this scenario ? Any chance the ADMT is installed on a localized version of the OS ? Was a group called "<Source Domain Name>$$$" created in the source domain ?

Problem solved : added DNS suffixes in search list....and voila...it's magic:
