  • Demoting the Global Catalog

I have a domain called GMP.SIGNET.COM.AU which contains many sites. In one site, the DC called CRS-DC is not replicating properly. I want to demote it and promote it, but when I try that in DCPROMO it warns me that this server is a Global Catalog server.

The server is not yet in production, thus I want to make sure that it is OK to demote and promote it. Does anyone see any problems with this?

    Re: Demoting the Global Catalog

As long as it is/was replicating I think I would consider it "in production", have you tried unchecking the Global Catalog box from Sites and Services from the server and/or another DC in the domain?

I don't know how extensive your enterprise is, but as long as said server isn't holding any roles you will be fine. I actually rebuild domain controllers monthly.

      Thanks Daxxian,

I will remove the GC checkbox from the S&S mmc first.
