  • How to rename a Domain controller

I have two Domain controllers in my Domain. One of the name is very lengthy. To avoid the confusion I want to rename it. Can anyone can suggest how to solve this?

    the Short answer:

Transfer roles and (dns if needed)
depromote it to a member server.
    place server to a workgroup
    rename server.
    place server to domain.
    promote it to a DC

    or for example: http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBH/TIP3500/rh3544.htm
    or as per microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=296592

Dumber's answer is correct, however if the DC is Win2003, it can be done without DCPROMOing it.

        Dude

Transfer the Roles to another server including GC and rename the domain controller and replace the Roles back to the server

        Cheers
