  • Adding/Replacing AD PDC

    Quick question...

You have a Domain being run by an old PDC. You want to bring up... and eventually replace with a new PDC (PDC2).

I followed the instructions in http://www.petri.com/how_to_install_...ndows_2003.htm and everything seems to work fine...
except, I can't find DNS in the administrative tools.

Should I have installed it before running DCPromo? (so it could take all the configurations?) or was DCPromo supposed to install DNS?

I think I've run into this question before...

    Thanks
    Ari

    Re: Adding/Replacing AD PDC

Ever since the inception of Active Directory there is no longer the PDC and BDC roles. There are, however, FSMO roles that will need to be transferred to the new DC.

Here's what MS says about adding DNS...
    http://technet2.microsoft.com/window....mspx?mfr=true

In my very limited experience doing this in a test environment, I had to wait awhile (for replication) before the zones showed up in the DNS console.

EDIT - one more thing, you should make the new DC a GC server too http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313994
