  • Migrate the NT4 Domain Controller to Windows 2003.

    We have small Network:
    1) 20 PCs running Windows 2000 and XP.
    2) One PDC Server runs Windows NT.4 Server (there is no BDC Server).
    3) One member Server runs Windows NT.4 Server and Exchange Server 5.5.

Now we joined with other small company:
    1) 10 PCs running Windows 2000 and XP.
    2) One PDC Server runs Windows 2003 server.
    3) One member Server runs Windows 2003 server and Exchange Server 2003.

We need to replace the new company servers with all of its Current PDC Windows 2003 Server and Exchange 2003 OS configurations, and joint them to our Current NT.4 Network.

    1) Replace the new company servers with all of its PDC Windows 2003 Server and Exchange 2003 configurations, and joint them to our Current NT.4 Network.
    2) Use the new exchange 2003 Server without changing its current configuration (change only the Exchange 2003 name to joint the NT.4 Domain)
    3) Use the new Domain 2003 Server without changing its current configuration (change only the Domain 2003 name to coexist with the NT.4 Domain)
    4) Move all User Accounts and all Data from NT Domain to 2003 Domain.
    5) Move all Exchange 5.5 User Accounts, Mail Boxs, and Public Folder .etc to the Exchange 2003.
    6) Remove the old NT.4 Domain and Exchange 5.5 from the Network.

Please I am in need of anyone help to let me know how I can do this complicated job.

Check this link...looks like someone has done the required process of moving an NT domain to Windows 2003 AD domain.

If u have the budget then you can buy migration tools for this specific purpose.NetIQ Migration tool.

      there is 2 ways...

      1. set other Server wich replicate your domain.
      2. make "back up" system state and in w3k server you could restore domain...

      but it could be problematic..

I have did the same, by this way:

      1. made disk imge
      2. prepied DOMAIN for AD
      3. made upgrade NT4 to w3k server
      4. to start AD, I first have to make DNS server and then again start AD instalation...
(because, as I have info w3k have Active Directory , but no DOMAIN... w2k sever has both of them...)

I do not think there is a need to over-complicate this:

        1) Create two-way trust between the W2K3 AD and NT domain

        2) Migrate the user accounts using ADMT

        3) Move the mailboxes using ExMerge (or you want to go creative, you might try AD Connector)

The final result will be: all users are in the W2K3 AD.

Re: Migrate the NT4 Domain Controller to Windows 2003.

Can I undertake the same process with SBS 2003 rather than 2003?

Re: Migrate the NT4 Domain Controller to Windows 2003.

SBS does not allow the creation of ANY trusts, so you are blocked there.
You could do it via a temp DC though (idea courtesy of www.sbsmigration.com, aka swing migration).
You could set up a computer temporarily as a 2K3 server and pull in all the info as suggested. You could then break the trusts and once ensuring all FSMO roles are on the 2K3 server "upgrade" it to SBS2003.
I will have to check that you can actually remove trusts, though.
Another thought, is that you could probably "Swing" the temp 2K3 DC to the computer that will finally be your SBS. Though you would have to keep the Exmerge to the final stage.
Need to check that one more thoroughly as i can see some sticking points!!
            TIA

Im honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.

              Hi,
I'm in the process of Migrating NT 4 Domain to Win2K3 AD, from the steps which you have provided is i can migrate Domain Objects such as; users & computers. But what about after migrating all the computers and Users from NT 4 To AD Domain, what to do with the NT Domain? Shall i just demote it and get rid of it?

In this case if I'm going to create two-way Trust between domains, it means that the NT Domain is in different Name and the new Win2k3 AD is in different Name like NT.Local and AD.Local.

What about the computers NetBIOS Names? Is that will be changed from NT.local to AD.Local during the Migration?

Thank you all for your great help.
