  • Disaster recovery -- active directory

    Hi all,

Recently my windows 2000 backup domain controller hard disk crashed. Can I just replace the hard disk and re-install the OS and again promote it to the back up domain controller. This backup DC also acts as "System update server". So I want the old name to be retained.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx
    skm

If you had any FSMO roles on the crashed server you first need to seize those and transfer to the operating server.
After that you need to perform metadata cleanup in the AD (the remains of the old server that was not orderly removed from the AD and demoted) and only after that can you install the new DC with the same name as the crashed one.
