  • Demote primary DC Windows 2003 server

For some reason, my primary DC in Windows 2003 server has a lot of problem.
Therefore I need to rebuilt my AD as well as DNS server, in which the machine's name is DRAGON

    DRAGON
    -----------
    IP: 192.168.77.12
    Primary DC
    Primary DNS
    DHCP Server
    File server

    PHOENIX
    -----------
    IP: 192.168.77.14
    Secondary DNS

    PANTHER
    -----------
    IP:192.168.53.2
    Secondary DC
    Secondary DNS

    ZEBRA
    -------
    IP: 192.168.77.17
    WINS Server

I would like to demote the primary DC and rebuilt the primary DC as well as reinstall the DNS. What is the safest and easiest way to accomplish this. I do not want to mess-up my entire network. FYI, all of the servers listed are installed with Windows 2003 server w/ SP1

Please advice. Any detail procedures are highly appreciated. Thanks in advanced

What subnet mask are you using?
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.
    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
    2 2 1 1 2

      All subnet 255.255.255.0
FYI, DRAGON and PANTHER is connected via VPN

What sort of AD problems are you having? Might be easier looking at fixing that rather than popping a new server in especially since you have 2 DCs.
        1 1 was a racehorse.
        2 2 was 1 2.
        1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
        2 2 1 1 2

as an alternative you can create a temporary DC on the subnet from DRAGON.
Then move all the roles he helt to the temp dc (check it with repmon and test it).
          (maybe DHCP/DNS Shema etcetc)
Domote the old one, clean up metadata (if nessasary) and resinstall the Dragon.
