  • domain rename in mixed win 2000, 2003/exch 2003 domain

    Here is the situation:

    We have the following setup

    1 win2k sp4 domain controller
    1 win2003 sp1 exch 2003 sp2 backup domain contoller
1 win2003 terminal server (to be added later, not on network yet)

Client has purchased a new domain which coincidentally happens to be the same name as their active directory domain name.
(eg.. active directory "mydomain.com" purchased domain "mydomain.com", current e-mail and web server domain mydomainservices.com)

What would be suggested, should I do a domain rename for the local domain to mydomain.local, should I implement a symbolic link in DNS to allow webserver access from local AD domain?

Any advice would be most appreciated

    Stu

Manipulating the DNS is probably the way to go since if you wanted to rename the domain you'd have to upgrade your 2k server to 2k3 and then switch the Domain Functional Level and the Forest Functional Level to 2003.

Totally agree with Jeremy. This is not a case for domain rename - you can solve the issue quite easily in DNS
