  • SQL 2008 R2 virtualised

Does anyone have any experiences running SQL 2008 R2 on top of VMware (vSphere to be precise) I know people always mention resource contention with VMware but were lookinto at implementing this with Dell M610 Blades with 96 GB ram with a backend Dell EMC CX4-240 SAN.

Are there any gotacha's in virtualizing SQL?

    Thanks

Hrm, I'll have to check when I go to work next week, but I think we may be doing that on many boxes. In our case though the hardware doesn't have much load EVER. OTOH I doubt it's SQL 2008.

The main thing in Virtualizing SQL is with I/O, specifically on the VMware configuration and how the SAN is presented to the VM that SQL is running on. If you check Brent Ozar's blog he has some good "gotchas" to watch out for. This one in particular is a good read: brentozar.com
Then Jonathan Keyhayias has some good reading on it to.

          Hi MeltonDBA,

Thanks for the response. I think we have the I/O covered as we currently have a Dell EMC CX4-240 SAN connected to a Dell M1000e Blade Chassis over FC with 300k FC disks.

Marcel - Thanks very much for that, it looks interesting. Apologies but I never got notified about you reply.

Well, I've done it plenty of times and contention is a real issue so I tend to not put anything really busy in VM. Keep it to your lesser apps that don't get tons of traffic.
