  • SQL Server 2000 Basic Administration tasks

    Hey all,

Now i've been plodding along with SQL on one of our systems but have not been doing anything other than checking disk space on it since i came to Oz.

What are some of the basic things that i should be doing on a daily, weekly, monthly basis to keep the server running sweet. No need to write massive lists if there are a few websites i can use and learn from.

I'll also be looking at upgrading the server to at least 2005 soon so expect more questions.

    Cheers

    Wullie

Have a look and see if any of the items listed under the SQL section are of any help. http://forums.petri.com/showthread.php?t=44120 (you may need to scroll down a little)

For your position, I'd start with the excellent article "BLITZ! 60 Minute SQL Server Takeovers" by Brent Ozar. It gives you a script and process to get to know your SQL servers, and put a lot of the major issues right first thing.

After that, here is an excellent checklist by Buck Woody, with the exact information you're looking for.

As you continue learning and supporting your servers, I'd encourage you to check out the Admin section on MidnightDBA.com for videos on specific tasks and concepts.

      Hope this helps!
