  • 2005 SQL Express can't create local groups

I have a 2003 standard DC I am trying to install backup exec 11d, it fails on installing SQL Express, so i try to manually install it, everything goes fine until i get an error saying failure creating local group SQLSERVER2005 blah blah blah. i am attaching screenshot. Anyone know what would cause this? I am logged in the the domain admin account and using that account as the service account.

Re: 2005 SQL Express can't create local groups

If its a DC you do not have local groups!

I've installed the product on DCs but not as part of another installation -- maybe worth downloading SQL Express and installing it on its own, then pointing backup Exec at it

    See section 2.10 here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910229
2.10 Installing SQL Server Express on a Windows Domain Controller

Security Note We recommend against running SQL Server Express on a domain controller.
It is possible to install SQL Server Express on a Windows domain controller; however, it cannot run on a Windows Server 2003 domain controller as Local Service or Network Service. SQL Server service accounts should run as Windows domain user accounts. It is also possible to install SQL Server service accounts to run as Local System, but this option is not recommended.

Do not change the role of the server after you install SQL Server Express. For example, if you install SQL Server Express on a member server, do not use the Dcpromo tool to promote the server to a domain controller. Or, if you install SQL Server Express on a domain controller, do not use Dcpromo to demote the server to a member server. Changing the role of a server after you install SQL Server Express can result in loss of functionality and is not supported.
And a lot more discussion here:

        (not tested recently)
Try specifying a domain account if prompted during the installation stage

Re: 2005 SQL Express can't create local groups

While I haven't encountered this specific problem, I found a similar issue thread on MSDN here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/for...-4b10148b5266/

This person wound up having extra troubles - partially installed/uninstalled SQLExpress - that it sounds like you don't have. But I suspect the key part of the final advice given that applies to you might be this:

Make sure you manually create the following security groups in the domain (active directory)
                SQLServer2005DTSUser$SERVERNAME
                SQLServer2005MSFTEUser$SERVERNAME$INSTANCENAME
                SQLServer2005MSOLAPUser$SERVERNAME$INSTANCENAME
                SQLServer2005INSTANCENAMEADHelperUser$SERVERNAME
                SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$SERVERNAME$INSTANCENAME
                SQLServer2005NotificationServicesUser$SERVERNAME
                SQLServer2005ReportingServicesWebServiceUser$SERVE RNAME$MSSQLSER
                SQLServer2005ReportServerUser$SERVERNAME$INSTANCEN AME
                SQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$SERVERNAME$INSTANCENAME
                SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$SERVERNAME
Add the installing user to each of these groups (not sure if that is really needed, but I did it)
                Reboot (a must)
Console into the server (regular RDP might work, but I was using the console connection)
Run setup as normal and it should work well.
Let me know if this resolves your problem, or if you encounter any further issues.
