  • Error: The file C:\...\outlook.ost is in use and could not be accessed

    I have a Win XP Pro SP3 user running Outlook 2003 combined with a Hosted Exchange service that intermittently receives the following error message in Outlook, mainly when Outlook is first started:

    "The file C:\..\outlook.ost is in use and could not be accessed. Close any application that is using this file and then try again."

    For the next 10-20 minutes there seems to be a lot of internet (network) traffic and Outlook seems to hang, untill finally Outlook will start.

    Here's what I've verified and tried so far, to no avail:
    - no other processes running that would affect Outlook.ost;
    - repaired .ost file using OST Integrity Tool;
    - deleted .ost file and let Outlook rebuild it;
    - 'Detect and Repair' Oulook 2003;
    - deleted all Outlook profiles and added new profile.

    After each intervention initially it looks like the prob is gone, but eventually (often within 24-48 hours) the error message returns.

    > Any help or advise would be highly appreciated.

    Do you need to have an OST???

    An OST is used as part of the Offline system and as such if your not using it offline disable it and delete the file.

      with hosted exchange - wouldn't you want to bde using OST files ? that way you have a cached copy of your mailbox.. and less data is pulled, the response is probably quicker.,.,,
