  • Outlook 2003 tasks, want to edit excel workbook in task.

Hi All this is my first post here so firstly i would like to say hello to the folk here who take time out to help others, altruism is a mighty fine trait.

    Here goes.

I am have a terribly annoying problem with my Outlook 2003 tasks, one which i didn't have before i got upgraded my our 2 man I.T. team the other week, (they have no clue and can't help unfortuanatly).

I have recently been upgraded from Office 2000 to office 2003. I have found a problem with it that only i have ever seem to have found ? possiby as when i search the web i can find no help for it. (no help from microsofts office help sites or no help from forum sites ! )

    The problem is this

I am the main administration for a business and am used to (and rely on) heavily using Outlook Tasks to keep on top of things.

In Outlook 2000 i was able to copy and paste an excel worksheet into a task and be able to then edit the worksheet by simply clicking in it and editing it with the excell toolbar which pops up. It was sooo usefull for me to be able to have this function as my tasks list is about 30 long and i don't want lots of spreadsheets in other locations i also have to keep track of.

i find this very very usefull as editing and using an excel spreadsheet in and as part of an outlook task is alot more diverse than simply editing an outlook task by itself.

In a task in Outlook 2003 when I paste in a worksheet, i I can see it but can't click in it and edit it like i used to be able to in Outlook 2000 whyyyyyyyyyy.

I can also, from the top of the screen go "Edit - Microsoft object - Edit" to try and edit the excel worksheet but this does nothing and does not let me Edit it, It simply has a black frame around it which you can pull it around by (make it a different size) but nothing more.

Something else weird i have found though is if i copy abit of an excel spreadsheet into a 'new message' i create, it lets me do all this just like i used to in Outlook 2000 ?? i can't see why i can do this in a new message but not a task ?

This suggests to me there is a bug in the program as it actually gives you the option of selection "Edit - Microsoft object - edit" but then does nothing and does not allow me to edit it.

Does anyone have a fix for this ? Have Microsoft removed this funciton perposfullly for some reason or is there some option i,m missing , (although why keep this function available for when in an e-mail and not in a task, i mean, who edits spreadsheets form within an email?), Can anyone help ???

Thanks too all who read this but i fear its something Microsoft overlook and therefore no fix available

If no-one has heard of it then that would explain the lack of replies.

Not sure if this is what you are doing but in 2003 and 2007 I can copy from Excel and paste into a task and then edit the excel data within those field, I haven't got an Excel task bar though?

Have your 2 man IT team tried anything?
A different machine? removing office 2000 and 2003 completely and re-loading 2003? a new windows profile etc?
Can you replicate this problem elsewhere?
      cheers

Hi Andy, thakyou for replying. I can copy (say part of a worksheet) from excel and paste it into a task in Outlook. When pasted into the task though it loses all its formatting and eveything becomes just text. When you copy and paste from Outlook 2000 it kept all its Excel formatting e.g. you could click in the pasted excel workbook in a task and an excel toolbar came up and you could format it like it was actually in excel (e.g. you could right click and format cell, apply formulas, use colours, change type of cell (e.g. to currency or number), insert extra columns and rows, find totals of numbers in a column etc basically just like you could do when using excel).

You said "excel taskbar" did you mean excel tool bar ?? as yes, there was an excel toolbar that appeared when editing an outlook 2000 task that had part of an excel spreadsheet pasted into it from excel.

As far as i've found, every single version of outlook 2003 whether from a friends house or any of the PC's at work suffer from this fault, i.e. replicated everywhere.

I would be very interested (and happy) to hear if you can paste something from excel into an outlook task and then edit it like it was being used from excel, this is the functionallity of the outlook 2000 task that i am sorely missing.

          Sorry yes, toolbar.

Hmm, just tried on Outlook 2003/2007, opened a new task, opened excel, created a basic 2 column - 3 row table, copied it and pasted it into the task and could then edit each column or row, change colour, format the cells with direction of text

Could only find formula in 2007 not 2003 though, not been able to change type to currency etc.

In 2007 there was a table / Excel spreadsheet option however it doesn't work for me complaining that Excel isn't installed!
          cheers

Aah the fact that you can even get these functions for 2003 gives me hope, i would be happy with these. Thankyou very very much for taking the time to help me

I have no idea why i have not got this available on my PC , but at least i know these must be a way to get them. I am on SP2 for office 2003, could the next SP be the answer ?

I have included a screen print of how all excel tables look when pasted into my task, that might help someone help me.

It looks like you are editing those individually?
I don't see any advanced excel functionality though.

Re: Outlook 2003 tasks, want to edit excel workbook in task.

Hi again, the table i uploaded was purely a simple table i'd created in excel and copied and pasted into Outlook 2003 tasks,

What i used to get looked like the image i have uploaded in the reply. The image in this reply is what the pasted worksheet looks like if you copy from excel and paste into an Outlook 2003 new email message. This is what it used to look like when i pasted it into an Outlook 2000 task.

For some reason they have left the ability to do this for Outlook 2003 Emails (i mean who edits an excel spreadsheet from within a new email ???, no-one !) but taken this ability away from tasks which was highly useful and practical.

The screen shots downloaded by you show some editing functions from within Tasks, i have none of these i gues there from Outlook 2007 running on Vista.

I see what you mean now.
If you paste special (in 2007) do you get these options?
For some reason it doesn't do anything for me, there is even an edit/open and convert for the "worksheet object".

Re: Outlook 2003 tasks, want to edit excel workbook in task.

There is no Paste special for Outlook 2003 (i don't have 2007) . I have managed to get a spreadsheet into tasks; by selecting from the drop downs at the top (image 1.)

                    Insert, object, microsoft excel worksheet

although its not of any practical use as, as soon as i click / go out of the task and then go back in it reverts to its stubborn 'i won't let you edit me' mode (like the initial image i posted) (image 2). You can see in image 2 i am also trying to edit it, when i click edit absolutely nothing happens, which i,m sure its meant too ?? its a conundrum, one which microsoft should be more honest about.

I think Microsoft have made a blunder and not bothered to fix it or release a patch or something that fixes it, or bothered to alert people of this bug. I would like to get an official statement from them saying as much, that would be nice and would also help others who are looking for a way round this problem (to stop people looking in vain), i doubt there is, will ever be one in existence though. Thankyou very much Andy for sticking with it and having a look but i fear there is no solution. Cheers mate.

I'm sure I'm skirting around the issue rather than helping to be fair
I do have a paste special in Outlook though.
I can import or paste special and, like you, it stops being editable.
Oddly though if you right click it and choose properties you get the choice of changing between "editable worksheet" or icon, which kind implies it should work!
                      cheers

Yes !! thats why i have kept looking for the past several months, all the evidence that points too, implies that you should be able to edit excel ..... and so forth..... we know the story now, but alas not, outlook has refused too yeild its secrets and twill remain a mystey that rivals the loch-ness and the disappearance of the crew from the Mary Celeste

                          Maybe try somewhere like this?
                          http ://www.office-outlook.com/outlook-forum/
I only googled it but as they are specialised it is probably a try?
