  • High Availability for CAS Exchange 2013

    Hi,
I was not following up Exchange 2013.Noticed that there is major change when it comes to HA for CAS.
CAS array has been discontinued in 2013.

So in that case the only option is to have a hardware load balancer to serve the purpose.

There is setup of 100-150 odd mailboxes wich we are going to configure and thinking to have Baracuda ADC 340 to do the HA of CAS.
    Any expert thoughts please.

    Regards,
    Sushil

Re: High Availability for CAS Exchange 2013

CAS Array was not a high availability solution on its own, and it was only for Outlook MAPI traffic. If you were using it for anything else then that was not the right thing to do.
Therefore the same rules apply to Exchange 2013 as they did for Exchange 2010, three options for HA:

    1. DNS with short TTL time - change the DNS entries manually.
    2. Windows NLB - not recommended by the Exchange product team and generally sucks. Also requires separate CAS servers.
    3. Hardware load balancer. The usual choice there is something like Kemp or Jetnexus.

I have never used the Barracuda load balancers, so no idea if they work well or not. However it is only HTTPS traffic that you are load balancing now, you can load balance at Layer 4, so that could mean other options for the load balancer.

      Thanks Simon.
I in fact looking for a redundant solution in exchange 2013 for CAS.

If one hardware goes down it should fail-over to redundant hardware.

Do you suggest if can do without Hardware load balancer.

If you want failover between the CAS role servers then you will need a hardware load balancer. Anything else is either not supported or requires manual intervention.
