  • Question about VSS/FULL backup of exchange and log pruning

What are the implications of backing up exchange with two different tools - and doing 1 as a copy backup and one as a full backup?

For example, if I use backup assist to do a copy backup, and then windows backup to do a full backup (thus pruning the logs), will they conflict in any way?

By definition, a "copy" backup should not interfere with any other backup systems or schedules.

First thing I'd say is that a backup is the hope of a restore.

Pick one of the backups, the full, run it for a while and see how long it takes to complete.
See what's involved in restoring a backup. Get a benchmark for the process.
Then if you feels it's necessary, run the second backup and see how much longer it takes.

Also, take a look at the restore. Is it giving you what you want, a database, mailbox or access to an email. Then judge if you want to look at other solutions.

But as stated, a copy backup should not interfere.
