• 2003->2010 - 2003 is not sending to 2010

Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster !

I have a 2003 box that is all in one sever, that is front end and back end. I am now migrating these to new servers. DC is now on 2008 and everything is running fine. I installed Exchange 2010 on one of the severs and gave it all roles.

My send and receive ports are different and I use a Smart host, I configured this on 2010 and with my test 2010 user, I can send external and internal fine. The problem is 2003 users. They can get mail fine, no problem there but mail sits in the Queue and it will hang there getting "The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt."

On this, as 2010 is sending and receiving fine, it does not to appear to be a firewall issue and the exchange 2010 config looks good. I have reset the connection (knowing that it could be issues) between 2003/2010.

I followed these directions pretty much step by step.
www petenetlive com/KB/Article/0000234.htm

As I use a different port to send and receive, the problem is receiving from 2003 this is what I have done.

2010-Changed the port on the Default <server> in receive connectors, set permissions accordingly. This is working for external mail coming in with this port set.

On 2003, the Default SMTP Virtual server>Delivery>Outbound Connections>TCP port (to match what 2010 receives on)

After doing this, I reset the connection between the servers and rebooted them both. I used..

Get-RoutingGroupConnector | Remove-RoutingGroupConnector

New-RoutingGroupConnector -Name “Exch2003-Exch2010″ -SourceTransportServers “EX-2010.mydomain.com” -TargetTransportServers “EX-2003.mydomain.com” -Cost 100 -Bidirectional $true

Should I be adjusting this port elsewhere ? I looked over the SMTP logs on 2003 and see nothing that stands out. What logs should I be monitoring in 2010 to watch for connection problems ?

Things look like they should be working at this point, I have been playing with this for days now, and many hours in google or bing with out a result.

Losing my mind on this one, any ideas or what info do you need to help here?

Have I missed anything ?

Re: 2003->2010 - 2003 is not sending to 2010

Why are you using a different port for email flow? I find that rarely works well and the only reason is usually down to poor products that take over port 25 for filtering services. Horrible design that shouldn't be used.

Can the two servers communicate?
Do you see email in the queues?
Where is the smart host configured? On the SMTP virtual server? If so, you must remove it and set it on an SMTP Connector.

Re: 2003->2010 - 2003 is not sending to 2010

I've gone over everything I could find on permissions on 2003 and 2010 side, followed them to a T with no result. For one moment, it started working but, to confirm it was working correctly, I rebooted the servers 2010 first, then the 2003 server, it no longer works.

Here is part of the SMTP log from the 2003 server, does this make sense to anyone ? What log should I pull from/enable on the 2010 side? I saw the setting for the logs and OMG I don't even know where to start....

Thanks for any advice anyone can give here !

Thanks for the reply Simon,

It's a long story but, we have a backup external site and we chose to use a different port due to security reasons.

With that being said, if I was to use 2010, Everything works flawlessly, email goes out, email comes in, I can send to EX 2003 users (so, all is working on that aspect), On the 2003 side, I can get email from 2010 and outside (so my port direction is working as it should) BUT, sending from 2003 just gets stuck in the mail Q...with a "The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt."

Yes, the 2 servers see each other, on the 2010 side, I can see all users and move accounts fine (only one test account has been moved at this point), In the logs (as you see above), they are trying to send to each other, so I would say yes here. I see all the connectors in 2003..

On the 2003 side, I see every mail I try to send (from 2003), sitting in the Queue (sitting in the new Routing Group Connector, and yes, I have deleted this and added a new one a few times)

The Smart-host was removed from 2003 (even before the install of 2010 Sp3), and put as a send connector in 2010, that is working as it should.

Oh, by the way, with Exchange 2003, from the day we set it up back in late 2004ish we have been using these port changes and never had a problem relating to that once the setting is changed.

Re: 2003->2010 - 2003 is not sending to 2010

Ok, I have been on 2010 running the Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant and see a few issues, anyone know how to address these ?

1.
Ping (Don't fragment = 'True' and buffer size = 4096) from server <ex2003> to remote server <EX2010.mydomain.com was not successful as the packet needs to be fragmented.

No idea on this one.

2.
Remote server EX2010.mydomain.com failed the mail acceptance test. BDAT command: Respond = Remote socket is not available. Check for firewalls and applications that can possibly block the BDAT command.

No anti-virus or firewalls running on this server (removed the anti-virus for testing here).

Any idea ?

I guess my 2003 Exchange server is "MarkedUnhealthy" for some reason. I found the log on the 2010 side when trying to connect. Anyone know how to address this issue ?

What can I do to fix this problem ? Please help !!!!

I found this in the Connectivity log

Re: 2003->2010 - 2003 is not sending to 2010

Ok, I set outgoing mail port on the 2003 server to 587 (this should keep it internal and not have any outside effect on my other ports). It appears it is now connecting to the 2010 server (see the log below).

The problem now is if a 2003 user sends a email, it gets a NDR right away showing. Internal mail works fine.

<EX2003.mydomain.com #5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 Unable to relay>

I tried a few tests on a hotmail, gmail and yahoo account with the same result.

What could be going on with the 2010 side that could be causing this issue ?

Showing the connection now...

Re: 2003->2010 - 2003 is not sending to 2010

Figured it out, as I was now coming in on port 587, I noticed that "exchange servers" was not checked on "Client <server name>. After checking the box and restarting the transport service (and iisreset on 2003), mail is flowing, I am able to send out via 2003 and internal mail fine, Nothing is stuck in the Q...

Everything is working as it should now. I hope this thread helps someone else later as it might just help along (as I looked at a lot of threads like this one before posting here)

Thanks for the help ! (or was it me just typing out loud ???)

Now ! Backups ! then the next part of this migration....

Mods you can close this thread if you would like...
