  • Question about importing mail from shell

I have exported mail from exchange 2003 into several (42) small PSTs.
-reason is I was using emerge and exporting at 28gb mailbox, and beleive emerge has 2gb pst limit.
Anyway, all these psts have to go into one mailbox on the new exchange 2010.
I have created a script in the past to do multiple import requests at once, but can I import multiple psts into the same mailbox at once, or should I be doing them one at a Time?

You are probably safer doing them one at a time

Re: Question about importing mail from shell

I think the only option is to do them one at a time, because Exchange will be looking at the naming convention of the files to know which mailbox to put them in.
It is possible to parse a directory of PST files and import all of them in one go, but it is expecting each PST file to be for a different user, not the same.
Therefore you would need to setup a command that imports user.name.pst and then keep putting new PST files with the same name in to the directory. That way you can keep repeating the same command over and over again.

Re: Question about importing mail from shell

Thanks for the help guys. I sort of done it manually in the end - my script named all the PSTs by date (as I exported In quarterly increments).
So I just exported a directory list of PSTs then build the import command around each file name, then pasted them into shell 1 at a time.

I notice then exchange automatically queues them up and runs them two at a time.

Just to let you guys know, it all imported ok
Done an item count using this command on exchange 2010 shell:

            Code:
Get-MailboxStatistics -server "server" | Sort -Property TotalItemsize | Format-Table DisplayName, LastLoggedOnUserAccount, ItemCount, @{expression={$_.totalitemsize.value.ToMB()};label=”Size(MB)”}, LastLogonTime, LastLogoffTime
And compared that to the item count reading from ESM in 2003 and it matched up
