  • Is 28gb too big for a mailbox in exchange 2010?

I am migrating a small company from exchange 2003 to 2010.
One user has a 28gb mailbox which is causing major problems exporting from 2003.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if that would be considered excessive for an exchange 2010 mailbox, and whether or not I should split it up somehow?
Obviously I am also concerned about the users experience as well (of course, it's the directors mailbox )?

You'll just run into performance issues. I have a few clients with some larger than that but we try to keep each folder under 5000 items. Works OK.

Indeed he has been facing performance issues.I'll have to do an item count, but I know his inbox alone is 9gb (with no sub folders), actually it might have been even bigger than that.

Not sure if it would be better to have one mailbox with folders per year to split it up, or a separate "archive" mailbox?

      Any advice appreciated.

I would keep it in one mailbox and split it up in folders, making sure you keep the item count low. But there's several of those here that have more Exchange knowledge than me.

Sembee would probably have the definitive answer for you.

Thanks, I think Ill do that then, it will be easier for the client to search through and so on.

MS have said that no folder should contain more than 5000 items (that has been long standing advice, so no idea if it is still valid, but it is a good number to work with)
