  • Migrating Ex2003 to 2010 - Do you install CAS first if only running one 2010 server?

Just wondered, as I haven't been able t find a definitive answer to this via Google and can't remember it being said during the training I did for the MCITP.

Basically, do you still install Client Access first and then follow with the hub then mailbox roles if you are migrating to just one Exchange 2010 server? Or do you just install all the three roles at once like you would with a clean install?

    Many thanks!

I can't speak to the proper order if the Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010 servers will co-exist, but if the Exchange 2010 server is the only Exchange server then you can install all of the roles at the same time.

All the material I have used/read has said that you have to co-exist initially?

You have to coexist, but that doesn't mean you cannot install all three roles at once. What the documentation is saying is that you must have a CAS role installed first - that means either on its own or combined with the others. You cannot just install the mailbox role for example.

So if this is a straight migration to another single server, do a typical installation of Exchange 2010 SP3, which will include the three roles.

Cheers, that's exactly what I needed.

Strangely, despite having obtained the MCITP for Exchange 2010, I still feel like I only know about half of what I need to know in order to get into working on Exchange migrations in a commercial environment.

          Pretty frustrating!

not unusual. Microsoft training and certifications can be earned by mostly doing some training material then sitting the exam and using logic to appropriate answers.

there's HEAPS of material that certifications and training don't cover that you only learn through hands-on experience and actually researching specific things.
