  • Exchange 2010 Attachment LImits

    Hi,

I am able to send an email with attachment of size 20MB, but i am unable to recieve.
I have already configured the receive connector to 20MB & vip user limits to 20MB, but still the issue exists.

I have two receive connectors 1) VIP users 2) Default (for all users)

    i have set the limits on 1 as 20MB & on 2 as 10MB.

    Any suggestions??
    Many thanks in advance

Have you increased the global setting (Org Config--HT--Global Settings)?
How are you determining which receive connector is used?
Have you confirmed there are no user limits in place?

        Re: Exchange 2010 Attachment LImits

There are message size limits per recipient:
Properties - Mail Flow - Message Size Restrictions

Suggest you set both receive connectors to 20Mb and check your account -- if mail flows, turn a connector down and see what happens

          Re: Exchange 2010 Attachment LImits

Should also note that a 20mb limit will not allow you to receive an email with a 20mb attachment - more lke 15-18mb, depending on the attachment type. That is because of encoding overhead.

If you want to receive files of 20mb, then all of the limits need to be set closer to 25mb.

Yes this encoding can increase the size of messages with attachment sometimes up to 30-33%.

Additionally, here's a solution (see solution 2 = using transport rules) how to create rules for High Profile Users (member of a security group in AD) and default users. https://www.simple-talk.com/sysadmin...exchange-2010/

In the above article you find powershell commands to configure the max sizes. (see also: http://exchangeshare.wordpress.com/2...il-size-limit/ )

here are command to check some current settings,
            Code:
            Get-Adsitelink | select Maxmessagesize
            Get-Sendconnector | fl Name,MaxMessageSize
            Get-Receiveconnector | fl Name,MaxMessagesize
            Get-TransportConfig | fl MaxSendSize,MaxReceiveSize
            Get-Mailbox | Where-Object{$_.MaxSendSize -ne "unlimited" -or $_.MaxReceiveSize -ne "unlimited"} | Select-Object DisplayName,MaxSendSize,MaxReceiveSize | sort | fl
Do you have a front-end exchange server in your orgnisation? You might like to run some of the commands also on other exchange servers in the organisation.

              Hi,

I have already set the message size limits per recipient to 20MB.
I don't think issue with encoding overhead- coz i am sending an attachment of 15MB.
I have set all the receive connectors to 20Mb, still unable to send.

              Output for my current settings:

                Re: Exchange 2010 Attachment LImits

The values are rather tight for your test...
                • The max message size limit was set to 20 MB = 20480 KB
                • 15 MB attachment = 15360 KB (was it actually exactly 15360 KB?)
                • increasing due to Base64 encoding, assuming the worst case:
                  15360 + 33 % = 20428.8 KB
Wow that is just 51.2 kb below the limit! And.. the size of the rest of the message was not even add to it!

Rule of thumb in real life is to multiply your desired new maximum size value in megabytes by 4/3.

To ensure the max size configuration is not part of the issue, why not increasing the max message size limits temporay to ( 50 MB * 1024 = ) 51200 KB for testing (undo the max message size settings configured on the user Mauser if the user is taking part in the tests**).
If the email message with the 15 MB attachments this time will be delivered, you know that you have configured all the required settings. If it works then you can turn to the desired values.

**)Take a note that it can take a while before the chnaged settings on the user take afect (user settings are cached on the server and refresh once in a while).

                  Hi,

I was able to fix this issue with +33%. But the problem is as i have multiple; it is working only if i set all the receive connectors to 25 MB. How to fix this? I want to keep only one receive connector to the max, rest others to default @ 10MB

                    Re: Exchange 2010 Attachment LImits

You shouldn't try and restrict on the Receive Connectors. Set everything to the higher limit, then block at a user/group level.

                    Simon.

can it be done as default limits for all users?
i have more than 500 users, going to each mailbox & changing the limit is difficult.

                        Re: Exchange 2010 Attachment LImits

Do it with a transport rule. Have an exceptions list and then create a rule limiting the size of the email except for members of the exception list.
