  • How to edit SMTP 250 Banner

    Hello everyone.

Recently one of our PCs picked up a virus turning it into a spam bot resulting in our IP being blacklisted. Well found the culprit and cleaned it up. We requested to be removed from the blacklist but they state our rDNS is still not right. When I check, I get the following:

    220 mail.MYCOMPANY.com [655 ms]
    EHLO please-read-policy.mxtoolbox.com
    250-MYEXCHANGESERVER.MYCOMPANY.local Hello [64.20.227.133]
    250-SIZE
    250-PIPELINING
    250-DSN
    250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES
    250-STARTTLS
    250-X-ANONYMOUSTLS
    250-AUTH NTLM
    250-X-EXPS GSSAPI NTLM
    250-8BITMIME
    250-BINARYMIME
    250-CHUNKING
    250-XEXCH50
    250-XRDST
    250 XSHADOW [686 ms]
    MAIL FROM: <[email protected]>
    250 2.1.0 Sender OK [686 ms]
    RCPT TO: <[email protected]>
    550 5.7.1 Unable to relay [5694 ms]
    QUIT

As you can see, the 250 banner is not matching. I have been pulling my hair out trying to find how to edit this but am stumped. Can anyone offer up some assistance? Many thanks

Re: How to edit SMTP 250 Banner

    That is the expected behaviour.
Incoming SMTP banner, which is what you see why you telnet in to the server is different to the outbound SMTP banner, which you cannot see.

Use the technique on this page to check how your server announces itself for outbound traffic:
