  • Direct specific type of user to set CAS

We are having an issue whereby users connecting to our Exchange 2010 environment receive a message on their outlook client 'Exchange is trying to connect to (our exchange)..', ordinarily this isnt a problem but we have a lot of Citrix users who cannot use Cached mode, so see this message frequently. Also, users with larger or multiple mailboxes report it can take 30+ seconds each time before the wait time is over and connectivity is restored.

We have done all manner of testing, one thing that sticks out for me is that we have a Blackberry Enterprise Server which proxies all requests through the beseadmin account. We have about 120 users, and I notice that on ExMon the beseadmin account can use up to 95% of available RPC CPU time.

The thinking now is, and if this isnt possible let me know, to create a new CAS that only services requests through BES, therefore freeing up RPC resource on our primary CAS server. How can I direct this specific set of users (or user, assuming its just the besadmin account I need to worry about) to this CAS only?

What version of BES are you using? If it isn't 5.0.4 (ie 5.0 SP4) then you need to update. You may also need to update the version of the MAPI CDO used by the BES.
I have sites with a lot mor users on BES and Ctrixi where this isn't a problem, so that would tend to suggest that you aren't using the latest versions. BS 5.01 and 5.02 were pretty bad with performance.

I also don't think it is going to help, because BES in particular is accessign all the mailboxes that you have connected to it. The load is still going to be there on those mailboxes.

We have upgraded to 5.04 and today experiecned the same issue again, our CAS is also getting hammered to 100% cpu mainly via the IIS Worker admin process. Im interested in the idea of adding another CAS, is it possible to split (for example) OWA to one server, and BES/MAPI/BB requests to flow through one CAS and not the other?

BES doesn't use web services unless you have configured it to do so.
If you haven't made those changes then it isn't BES that is hammering the
The usual cause is an ActiveSync device, often an iOS device with an old OS version.

I don't think introducing another CAS role holder is really going to help. If you haven't got a CAS array in place then clients aren't going to start using it anyway.
