  • Upgrade from exchange 2003 to exchange 2010

Is it possible to install exchange 2010 on existing exchange 2003 (upgrade) like upgrading OS? Or I have to install the exchange 2010 on new hardware, and then move all the configuration?

There is no in place upgrade option becase Exchange 2003 is 32 bit and Exchange 2007 and higher is 64 bit. Therefore you will have to install Exchange on to another machine and move the data.

      Thank you for your answer,
so from your answer I understand that the only issue is the 32/64 bit.
So can I upgrade exchange 2010 on existing exchange 2007? if yes, all the data are upgrade too?
Sorry for my untechnical questions J.
(We have those question from my class)

Sorry, but there are too many changes to allow an inplace upgrade

Thank you for this. It will come in very handy.

I'm in the process of planning a migration to 2010 from 2003 and need to do as much research as possible.

Miland Naphade has a great guide that highlights the high level steps for a transition. Although if i were you id look at Exchange 2013 if you havent started yet.
Although Exchange 2013 doesn't support a transition from 2003. But it does support a migration/cross forest (inter-org) move, which has more challenges than a traditional transition.

Paul Cunningham also has a great detailed and thorough guide on his website exchangeserver.pro.

              http://exchangeserverpro.com/wp-cont...ng-Chapter.pdf

This has all the steps required for a transition. But you need to part with around $30 if i recall to download the full guide.

Thanks. I'll give the transition guide a read-thru. I haven't even purchased the licenses yet so I've got time yet. We will be doing something pretty simple. Current config is 1 FE server for OWA and ActiveSync and 1 BE server that contains the mailboxes.

Re: Upgrade from exchange 2003 to exchange 2010

                  Hi,

As said by Sembee since both of your Exchange Server are having different bit configration so for this you should install the new Exchange to the new area and then for the migration process you should take care of the following steps like:

                  1) First make sure that the Active Directory Permissions for the user for both the Exchange Server are made.
                  2) Also make sure that each time you are migrating the user's mailbox then each time you have to take care of every user's special identification (SID).
                  3) While migrating you would be asked to change to the new outlook after each moving of the user's mailbox if there are different outlook version in the two different exchange environment.

4)Two way trust between the two domains if you are moving the mailbox to the new Exchange present in the new domain.

                  Thanks
