  • Exch 2010 OWN Active Sync Not Working

Hey Guys, Rather new to exchange and Brand new to 2010. I just installed 2010 on a windows 2008 r2 box and I've got in/out mail working.

Not sure I have OWA and Active Sync correctly set up.

I'm not sure I completely understand the IIS component. If I create an http redirect to mail.domain.com , do I neet to have a virtual directory set up with that name? or does the OWA Virtual Directory still handle Web Mail?

Right now OWA dosent work inside or out. Active sync works when I am on the local wireless but cant connect remotely. I suspect this is something wrong with my IIS link setup but I am not sure to fix it. I can provide more details if needed.

    Any thoughts?

Why did you put a redirect in on IIS? That isn't a requirement, and you should have fully tested the platform before you made any changes to the configuration.

Exchange is dependant on SSL and the self signed certificate installed with Exchange 2010 is not supported with ActiveSync or Outlook Anywhere.
Therefore I would suggest that you change the SSL certificate to a trusted commercial certificate and then reset the virtual directories using the tool inside Exchange 2010. If you have made modifications to IIS then you should reverse those and get the system back as close as "out of the box" as you can.

Re: Exch 2010 OWN Active Sync Not Working

      Ok Update,

I removed the HTTP redirect from the default web site.

Previously, I had an exchange 2007 server up and running which worked fine, I broke my hard drive mirror and kept the 2ndary just in case. So long story short, I can bring up the old r2 server by simply swapping out hard drives.

So after doing this I setup the new server as close as possible to the old. So now both my CAS links for OWA point to mail.domain.com I use forms based authentication user name only. This is how it worked on the other server. Still dosent work on the new, however...

I noticed that there is an IIS virtual directory named "mail" Do I need to create this on the new? Also should I create any internal DNS records for "mail"?

Now When I look at my Event Logs I can see there are Cert errors so I suspect I am going to have to create a new Seld Signed cert again which sucks. But I'd like to get this working now with the default settings before I have to go through that horrible process. The other thing I am noticing is that I cant receive mail from my yahoo account unless It's a reply. Does any of this make sense?

Re: Exch 2010 OWA Active Sync Not Working

        No help really??

I still cannot get my OWA working properly. I have checked DNS and can resolve the server by both IP and FQDN. I checked my firewall and all exchage entries are allowed as is http and https.

I set my owa cas links to server.domain.local and .com respectively and still no access.

When I http to local host or direct to the IP I get the cert mismatch page but then the screen is just blank. I believe a mismatched cert I can get passed as I have been able to in the past. But all I get is a empty white page on internal clients and even the server itself. Any Ideas??

If you require immediate support then the phone number for Microsoft Support is available at http://support.microsoft.com/ They will be happy to assist you immediately (in return for a small fee).

          a. You posted on a Saturday, then bumped on a Sunday.
          b. No one is paid to provide you with support.
          c. Most of us have other things to be doing and post in spare time.

The virtual directory "mail" is not standard.
Self Signed certificate have a habit of not creating correctly - deploy a commercial certificate.

I would strongly suggest that you get a consultant in to fix the problems, because it appears you are making a lot of mistakes that you don't need to. The migration procedure is documented on Technet. Microsoft even provide tools to do so, but even so I think it is a waste of time learning how to install Exchange 2010, because those skills will be of no use to you moving forwards.

Re: Exch 2010 OWA Active Sync Not Working

Thank you for your condescending remarks, But really if I wanted to be insulted I'd go on the Jerry Springer show. I came here because I was looking for some help from someone who knows Exchange better than I do. Not to get insulted and told to give up.

As far as getting a Consultant to do this it is not an option, neither is a commercial cert. I made this work before with 2007 and I think it's just something small to get the OWA and Active Sync working, so I was looking for a little help an what to look at or try, and I tried to give out relevant details. I am sure this is just a small simple thing that I am overlooking.

I supoose I was a little in a rush and maybe was a bit presumptuous on getting immediate feedback, I guess I was just a little frustrated after not being able to figure this out and my mail being down for days.

Is there anyone else out there that has an idea of what I can try or look at to fix this? I don't think it is a cert problem since even a mismatched cert will let you ignore it and get to the site. I know I'll have to regenerate a certificate at some point to have the correct name in it but I would like to get OWA and active sync Working first.

Re: Exch 2010 OWN Active Sync Not Working

ActiveSync with the self signed certificate is not supported.
Just because you got it to work before isn't a good reason to keep doing it.
As for something small - that is unlikely. IIS and SSL are core to the Exchange product and it is very easy to screw it up.

You made too many changes before verifying that the server worked correctly. Now you are in a mess. The quickest option may well be to remove the CAS role, then remove IIS and reinstall the whole lot again. Exchange should work straight out of the box, no changes required to the configuration.

The changes I made were AFTER owa wasn't working. Everything else si working, In/Out Mail Autodiscover etc. All I changed was the CAS OWA links and http redirect. I don't really see how a complete reinstall is justified when the changes I made are rather small and can easily be set back to default values (and have been). The only thinkg during install that I wasn't sure about was a new screen I saw which asked if I had a internet facing CAS server. I didn't fill this out which i think is whyI am getting certificate mismatches but I dont believe its the same probalem as the OWA not working internally.

Ok lets do some troubleshooting here then....

Have you tried re-creating OWA virtual directory yet if not then lets do this and try OWA?

Note: Please reset ONLY OWA vdir.

Re: Exch 2010 OWA Active Sync Not Working

OK So I did end up rebuilding the server, reinstalled exchange and have in and outbound mail. No anti spam agents and no forefront.

When I installed exchange this time I entered my internet facing CAS server as domain.com, My OWA external link used to be mail.domain.com but the install said to use the domain name and not the server name, so thats what I did.

I have test in and outbound mail and they are both working so I now have an out of the box exchange install.

So now when I go to the default internal OWA link I get an untrusted cert error. If I install the cert it just gives me a blank page. Exactly what it was doing before, so as I expected a reinstall was unnecesarry.

Should I still try to reset the owa directory? Thgis is a brand new server install not just an exchange install.

No need to reset if its a fresh install. Please confirm the internal and external URL for OWA vdir and what authentication method is selected?

Have you run the various tools at testexchangeconnectivity.com?

You get very detailed reports of the exact point of failure.

The Auth I checked was in exchange, Did you mean IIS?

The OWA Vdir has basic enabled only, should I change this to forms based?
