  • How to regenerate your OAB

Our OAB was working fine for the better part of a year after the migration from 2003 to 2010 but the other day it stopped. Here is what I did to fix it. Figured this might help someone else down the road.

    1. Make sure the System Attendant service is running and is not giving any errors.
    2. Then open the Exchange Management Console and go to Organization Configuration and click Mailbox.
    3. Now click the Offline Address Book tab then highlight your offline address book and click update in the action pane.
    4. Click yes to the question asked and then check your event logs and make sure the OAB was in fact regenerated.
    5. Now restart the BITS service and then restart the "Microsoft Exchange File Distribution" service.
This will force an OAB update now, check the exchange server event logs and make sure it did in fact do the update. Now go in to outlook under send/receive and select download address book and click ok to start.

That is a lot of work when you could just do this:

    get-offlineaddressbook | update-offlineaddressbook

Never had to do anything like those steps to resolve issues with the OAB.
