  • External eMail not being recieved

    Hi all,

First post here, but having some trouble with our exchange server! It's been intermittent for a while but it seems to have got worse over the past few weeks.

First off we are running SBS2008 x64 and Exchange 2007. We had a chap in our office who worked in IT but has left (us in lurch!) so now we're stuck trying to figure out some issues! I am fairly computer literate, but this has got me stumped.

Emails will be working fine, inbound and out, then they will stop, and show no errors (Outlook will say it's connected to Exchange without any issue). We can still send/recieve internally while this is happening.

Even if the Exchange services are stopped and restarted, this does not cure the problem. Upon rebooting the server, emails seem to come through, although today, we received about 2 emails then went quiet again.

    Any help would be fantastic.

    Sam

    Hi Sam,

how much disk space do you have available on the C: and D: drives on the server?

do you have multiple internet connections, or just one?
what domain name do you receive emails for ?

Do some research into Back Pressure

      Symptoms seem correct

        tehcamel:

C drive is 100 gig, 50 gig remaining

D drive has 500 odd gig remaining

On a side note - we have 8GB of ram, and it's using 6 pretty much constantly. Running at 77% in resource manager - could this have anything to do with it?

We do have 2 internet connections, they come in via a Zyxel firewall i believe.

There's a few domains that we receive from, just recently added another one which appears to be working fine.

Ossian - Never heard of that before but i will do some research

        Thanks in advance

Re: External eMail not being recieved

If it was back pressure, then it would affect all email. If it is just internet email then that would tend to suggest the problem is not Exchange.
Next time it happens you need to look in queue viewer to see what messages are being reported and also use some of the internet tools to query your SMTP traffic to see if there are any errors. At the moment it is hard to say what the issue is.

            Hi Sembee,

As far as i know, it affects all the emails, but the majority of addresses we receive to get very little mail it would be hard to tell, so for all intense purposes it does affect everything

              @ Sembee
I thought backpressure first stopped external emails, then internal emails as the pressure went up, or is this just Exchange 2010?
