  • moved user from one database to another

I moved a user from one database to another, and need to move him again to another database but it doesnt give me that option. Is it because of the pointer it creates?

I've moved a bunch of users from a larger database to smaller databases. Is there a defrag that needs to be done to reclaim that space?

Which version of Exchange is this?
If it is Exchange 2010 then you need to clear the move request before you can move the user again.

a defrag would reclaim the space, but don't really worry about it.

If you have a look at event ID 1221 in the application log, it will tell you how much white space is available - this will probably be a huge amount if you've offloaded mailboxes to another store.

Exchange doesn't work like a PST file - it will reuse whitespace.

Defrag in Exchange will not release space, just optimise free space in the database file.

Offline defrag is slooooowww -- c. 1h per Gb so recommended way is to move mailboxes to a new database and delete the old one

As this is an Exchange 2007/2010 forum, offline defrags shouldn't even be considered. I have never done one on those versions as there is no need.
Simply move all mailboxes to another database and drop the original.

No downtime, no risk to the data (offline defrag can cause the loss of data, so is not risk free).
