  • Best way to create new Domain

Hi all. I'm having major problems with my SBS2008 server, so want to make a new one on a new machine.

I've failed in doing a bare metal restore to newer hardware, so am going to re-create the whole thing from scratch with SBS 2011.

We only have four users with exchange mail and calendars, and basic data shared.

The main issue I can forsee is transferring exchange data.

So, can I simply create the new domain, and server, and then from each users outlook 2010 import the old OST or PST file? or should I export the mailboxes from within the existing exchange server and import them when I've created a new one on the new server?

Play it safe - if the old server is still active, then export the content to PST through Exchange.

Do be aware of this issue with a new domain though:

      Thanks simon.

Yes, I remember from my last move to a different domain when replying, and even when typing in existing users, it used the old OU, I just made sure i deleted the autofilled entry, and typed it in again.

So is exportng to PST and importing a one step each way process? just to a file, USB drive, and back in again?

If there is existing mail in the new exchange server mailboxes, will it merge with the old restored ones?

Simon, just looked into this, and it seems quite complicated.

Firstly, my sbs 2008 box is 64 bit, and so are all of my clients 64 bit.

will it not work if each user just opens outlook, and then exports their content to a pst?

PST import doesn't replace the mailbox, it is additional content, so if you have content there already then it will be added to it.

While you can do the export through Outlook, that can get rather tedious when you can quickly setup the bulk export and then import.

The fact that things are 64 bit is completely immaterial.

go to each outlook and export the mailbox to pst.

create the new mailboxes on the new server, and import the emails through outlook, on each machine.

            make a pizza.

oh, and use NK2edit (google search) to delete the entries of the other employees.

Reheat your pizza, and enjoy it again.
