  • Internal Mail Redirect - Exch 2007/2010

    Hi Guys,

Im in the process of replacing our server core, we have an Ex 2007 server in place, and it is being replaced with an Ex 2010 server.

I am also starting AD again from scratch, to make it clean and tidy.

As our site covers multiple locations, it will take a couple of weeks to roll out the upgrade (all hardware being replaced)

I have set up the new servers, DC, AD, Ex 2010, DNS etc and still have the Old DC and Ex 2007 server running on the original domain to service the users that are yet to be upgraded.

As we run terminal servers at each location, its just a case of exporting mailboxes to PST files on the old TS, set up user on the new TS and set Outlook to the new Ex 2010 server and import the PST.

Also, I have set up our Mail Marshal software (Public SMTP Spam/Archiving software) so that any incoming external Email is sent to the correct Exchange server, depending on if the users has been migrated to the new server yet (just done with a AD group - "New Server" - users are added as they are migrated)

This is working fine, and directing incoming email as needed, the only issue is, if a user sends an Email internally it just goes to the users mailbox on the server it was sent from (we are using the same email domain name on both servers.)

E.G. User "A" is still on the old Ex 2007 server, and sends to User "B" who is on the New 2010 server, the massage goes to User "B"s old mailbox on the Ex 2007 server.

Is there a way to force the Ex 2007 server to forward all messages - internal and External - to a different host?

I tried a transport rule, but there is no option to forward the message to another host.

    Any other ideas?

No, you can't force the email out.
What you should have done is not mail enable the users until they were migrated. Then configure the server to share the SMTP address space with the other one.

Hi Simon, I forgot to mention that the new users dont have mailboxes created on the new Ex2010 server until they are migrated.

You still need to setup the Exchange server to share the SMTP address space. By default Exchange presumes it is responsible for all email for the domain, so will not send it out to an external SMTP server.
