  • Help recovering messages disapeared in an Exchange 2007

First of all - as this is my first post here -, a big Hi! to all of you.

I visit this forum from time to time as this is, in my opinion, one of the best places I've found on the Internet as a source of information when I'm stuck or I want to learn something.

And today I would like to ask your advice.

We have a SBS 2008 R2 server with an Exchange 2007 (No SP yet).

Overs the three last months, two domain users have lost part of their mails like, for instance, everything between September 2011 and June 2009.

I checked the edb (size : 82 GB) and eseutil returned a "dirty shutdown" error.

Trying the defrag option with eseutil returns error -1019 (Jet_errPageNotInitialized, Blank database page) after 1.92 seconds.

I tried to repair the edb, eseutil said it corrected some errors, but still no sign of these missing mails.

Any idea of how to recover them?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Pierre

Are they using Cached outlook? If so, there is a chance they may be in the deleted items (beyond the recycle bin) section

Do you have any backups that might cover the relevant period?

You could also try third party tools such as Ontrack PowerControls, or you could look at professional data recovery

Since you have repaired the database, I suspect you may not have much luck with getting more within exchange

as ossian said, repairing databse was a good option.

now, you just need to recover the data, using your recovery process (since you have good backups, right?)

it's also possible that those usershave auto-archived, so you should check the client-side settings

Re: Help recovering messages disappeared in an Exchange 2007

I would suspect that the database is bad.
Therefore your best option is to recover what you can, then move everything to new databases. Exchange 2007 allows four databases to be created, so a new database can be created, move mailbox used to move the content and then drop the original. As far as I am concerned a repaired database should not be left in production, so a new database would be something I would be doing.

Your version information is wrong as well - there is no such thing as SBS 2008 R2, so it is either SBS 2008 or SBS 2011.
If is SBS 2011 (which is based on Windows 2008 R2) then you should have Exchange 2010.

I would also suggest that you get Exchange on to the latest service pack, whether it is Exchange 2007 or 2010.

Re: Help recovering messages disapeared in an Exchange 2007

Thank you all for your replies and interest in my problem.

As backup software, we use Shadowprotect - a product to recommand - for about a month. The problem I descibed was first noticed around July on one of the two mailboxes but the user didn't let us know before August. So, the 15 days backup we had were gone. Same happened with the other user, in November.

AS for recovery of the mailboxes, we use Granular Recovery for Exchange, from stoagecraft. Using the tool within the two affected mailboxes show the same result : same messages gone.

I have a few more questions:

          - if I create a new databe, and copy all the mailboxes in it, should I first stop the Exchange service (seems obvious to me, but hey....)? Is the process of switching databases as easy as simply poiting to the new one?
-can I install the SP over the existing database hoping that some cleaning will be done?

          Thanks again for your time.

          Have a nice day.

Not sure why stopping the Exchange services would be an obvious thing to do. New databases and moving the content is something done in Exchange. If you stop the services then you cannot do it.

Installing the latest service pack is unlikely to correct any issues with the database because you most likely have physical issues with the database which a new database is the only fix.
